Heavy metal is a form of rock music which is characterised by heavy metallic sounds using a combination of guitars, bass and drums. The music is loud and the vocals may not be very audible. A band usually consists of a lead guitarist, a rhythm guitarist, a drummer, a bassist and a singer who may be an instrumentalist.

Unlike other forms of music, where vocals are important, the electric guitar plays an prominent role in heavy metal music. They are played with distortion pedals and amplified to create powerful sounds. Techniques like sweep picking, tapping are used and a guitar solos are common. Most bands have two or more lead guitarists. The bass provides the low end sound to make the metal “heavy” . Metal drumming is used to create a loud constant beat.

Over a period of time, many sub categories of heavy metal like thrash metal, death metal, black metal, power metal have developed. These forms of music are more aggressive and louder than other heavy metal forms.
